By James GartlandFor decades, architecture has been the domain of architects.
Today, that is changing, with a growing number of companies developing their own architectural portfolios, often with different styles.
Some of these portfolios have been inspired by real estate.
Others have been built around the idea of sustainability.
And then there are the more traditional types like architecture and industrial design.
In the latter, a large percentage of the portfolio’s assets is owned by companies that already have extensive design experience.
“I think we have a lot of the same trends.
It’s really just the way people are getting into the business,” says James Gartson, chief executive of Architectural Resource Group.
Gartson was born and raised in Canada and has built up a portfolio of more than 400 architecture portfolios across the country.
He’s been involved in the industry since the early 2000s, when he was a partner at New York-based architecture firm Toulouse Saatchi & Alcan.
“It’s very easy to get sucked into one area, or one style, or even one company,” he says.
Gartons portfolio includes some of the world´s most prominent names in the field, including the London-based firm KKR, which builds buildings for major clients like the Royal Family and the United Nations, and the Italian firm Brescia, which is responsible for the iconic Lido and Palazzo.
In contrast, Gartsons portfolio also includes a handful of smaller firms, such as M&C Saatchich, based in Sydney, Australia; and the firm, which has a more commercial focus.
“You get these really, really good brands that are building really cool and unique projects, and I think that’s what drives this industry.
It is very collaborative, but also it is very fast paced.
You can build an office with one or two architects and one or three people in an hour, but it takes five to 10 days for someone to get done,” Gartsone says.
The world of architecture, he says, is “a lot more collaborative and it is fast paced.”
Gartsons most notable portfolio, a three-bedroom house in the city of Toronto built by architect James Halliday, is a work of contemporary urban design that also has a “living” element.
The home, designed by M.D. Halliday Architects in collaboration with architects of the New York Metropolitan Design Coalition, includes a large, open-plan kitchen and living area, a private courtyard, a patio and a walk-in closet.
Gartsones work has also been featured in the popular architecture magazine Landscape Architecture and featured in various architectural magazines.
“It is quite beautiful,” he said of the house, which will be sold in May for $1.7 million.
“We’ve had a really good response.
People have been very complimentary.”
Other firms that have started to emerge in the last five years are also focusing on sustainability.
In November, a global architecture firm, Aecom, was launched in London.
The firm, led by former British prime minister Gordon Brown, has been working with the UK government and a local community to promote sustainable design.
“If we can build a sustainable architecture in a city like London, why not in our own city, as well?”
It has to be about sustainability, and we don’t want our architecture to be a burden on the environment,” said Aecomm CEO David McLeod.
McLeod says that while the UK is a big market for architecture, many architects have not yet taken a “sustainable architecture” stance, even though many people are passionate about sustainability.”
When I first started looking at architecture, I thought it was a bit of a niche thing.
But it has now become mainstream and we have some very successful firms doing it,” McLeod says.
While many of the big names in this field have been doing their own portfolios, some of their competitors are building their own. “
I think a lot has changed in the architecture and sustainability world, so it is something that is really new for us,” he adds.
While many of the big names in this field have been doing their own portfolios, some of their competitors are building their own.
The first wave of companies to take on the architectural portfolio business was founded in the 1990s by French architect Jean-Jacques Mousseau.
In 2000, he and his partners built a home for French President Jacques Chirac, and Mousseaus’ company, Mousseaud, is still active today.
Mousseaux says that a “lot of the new firms that are coming into the market today have built their own portfolio” in the form of offices, retail space and residential properties.
McD, a partner with Mousseauer, says that he and others are starting to see a lot more of the company´s portfolio.
He also points to the growing number in the US of small companies that are trying to build sustainable portfolios.
“The big companies are doing this, but they are not necessarily the big
