An architectural design process that is less white, less patriarchal and more inclusive has been one of the central tenets of the feminist movement for more than a decade.
The work of British architect Paul Kelly, whose work has been featured in the BBC’s Architectural Designers of the Future, is one of a number of notable projects that have explored the issue of architectural design that is more inclusive and gender neutral.
“This was not a ‘white-washing’ or a ‘rebranding’ project.
It was about building spaces that were less white and more equitable,” Kelly told Al Jazeera.
“If you’re a woman in an industry, you have to put up with a lot of discrimination, you don’t have a choice.”
But the more diverse the spaces you can make, the less likely it is that you’re going to be treated as second-class citizens.
“Kelly, who is also a co-founder of the non-profit architecture community, The Art of Collaboration, said that he came to realise that his work was not only relevant but also empowering.”
My work has made me realise that the more people are able to see that my work is inclusive and inclusive of people of colour and gender identities, the more that we can change the world,” Kelly said.”
I am not just an architect, I am a human being who has to work with people of all colours and genders and orientations and genders.
“Kelly’s work is an extension of a project launched in 2013 by British architect Sarah Fitch, who has also used her platform as a member of the British Architectural Association to advocate for a “more inclusive architecture”.
Kelly’s concept was based on the concept of a “posterity chamber”, where the artist could create a space to display her work as a poster.
Kelly told Al-Jazeera that his concept was an extension on this idea, which is a way of thinking about how to incorporate gender in architecture and the building process.
Kelly explained that his idea is to create a “post-apocalyptic landscape” where people of various identities, genders and classes are able together to see the work that they create together and share in it.”
“The way we think about architecture is white, so we are all very aware of that and we are also aware that architecture is a male-dominated profession, but we’re still reluctant to talk about that because it’s considered taboo and so we keep talking about that.””
Kelly is not alone in his work on this topic. “

Many other architects have also begun to use their platforms to advocate against a lack of diversity in architecture.
